Setting it too low will not give the sharpen effect and setting it to high will give visual noise and shimmering to thin objects. With the new sharpening with image scaling setting in newer drivers, it does add too much visual noise even at default settings in games that used to look fine.

The Image Scaling option is the new image sharpening. The main setting in the drivers is only on / off and when set to on (needs to be done globally!) you can set the shaperning via the slider. Funnily enough, the actual scaling part is done via a few new display resolutions that the driver adds when the option is set to on.
