During (and before these days) S&W stamped the serial number on the frame, cylinder, barrel, and the extractor. It's a bit rare to find a K-22 or K-38 with non-matching parts. But not so for a M&P (Military and Police). They did make a million of them and issued many of them to police and military departments.

Jul 24, 2011 · It is chambered for the .38 S&W Round, and has a 3 3/16" barrel. The only serial number I can find is on the bottom of the grip but of the revolver. The number has only four digits, 36xx. The revolver is in very good mechanical condition with a clean up-pitted barrel. It locks up tight and appears to work well in both DA and SA modes.
