Pump points into Shaman to max out Wendigo Totem. With gear boosting Vitality/Chaos damage, you can facestomp anything until at least mid-game. Doesn't hurt that both of your attacks are AoE to clear groups before they can even reach you. That combo can reach mid-game without a single health potion used.

Overall though I think occultist is the better option. Blood of dreeg, storm spirit, and hellfire all add flat damage to your pets which ends up enhancing their damage a lot since necros provide so many pets.
