I went ahead and started the basic challenge -> saw that NUMBER grows rapidly -> did a quick rebirth to see what it does -> now, the NUMBER is stuck at 1, and the rebirth time factor grows very slowly.

Normal mode gear is pretty meh, but evil and sad have more features so more types of gear, and they stuff is just overall cooler looking.
