Unplug it and check the wires for power. One should have power. If neither has power with the ignition on then check the fuses. If one does have power then jump it to the other. If the fan comes on, the temp switch is bad. If it doesn't, with the wires still jumped, check for power at the fan. It's probably the spring loaded gear selector fork under the shifter assy behind the rear head. it's VERY easy for one side of that spring mechanism to fall off when assembling. this way you don't get a full throw when putting it in gear with the hand shifter. The linkage likely needs to be lubricated, although they are a little stiff at the best of times. I can't remember when you need to push the button; I think it's for shifting to reverse and low range.
