An estimated 293,800 violent and property hate crime victimizations occurred in 2012 against persons age 12 or older residing in U.S. households. Victims perceived that over half (51%) of hate crimes were motivated by ethnicity bias in 2012, which was higher than the percentage in 2011 (30%) and 2004 (22%).

It builds upon a previously released report that combined data from the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) with small area estimation methods and data from the FBI's Uniform Crime Reports to produce estimates for states for 1999-2013 and for some large counties and substate areas for 1998-2012.The rate of property crime decreased from 155.8 victimizations per 1,000 households in 2012 to 131.4 per 1,000 in 2013.
