Hmmmm, it sounds like the Cog railway is the clear winner. We saw the Royal Gorge from the top many years ago. It was the "Wine Express" trip on the RG train that caught my eye. Ya, we are winos! Guess we should plan on the Cog Railway for sure, and if time, the Wine Express, or else save that for another trip. Thanks for helping me decide!

I really thought views were great (but yes slightly different) on both sides. What I will point out is we were 2nd in line and able to sit in the very front seat on the way up. The train is roomy and comfortable. There are two seats on one side of the train and three on the other-side. The views from the three seat side are slightly better but the views from either side are incredible. Once you reach the summit the views are panoramic and the picture taking is easy-breezy. In general, grab a seat on the left side of the train when going up, as you get better views of the surrounding mountains on that side.
