When SWTOR came out, it contained a story revolving around Revan, showcasing a "new", canonical appearance (search for "swtor revan" to see that appearance).But the Dark Side ending is largely trash anyway, and it was never the canon one. And although I don't want to pull a Stephen King, in KOTOR 2 it's more about the journey than the destination; what your companions say, the challenges to the universe's presumptions which they pose to you, really forms the core of the experience.
Of course KotOR have some DnD layout, but it just minor and i don't feel it being DnD. TOR is WoW. In both games, the main character is unique character, they are not like any Jedi (or even Sith) ever existed. They are detached from the common Jedi thrope. But sadly the canon ending now making them just ordinary common Jedi.considering that when Kotor I came out, i couldn't play it at all until 1.03 patch was released, so i think Kotor I was more buggy at release. since i can play Kotor II without a problem (besides the major slowdown on all ATI and Nvidia Cards) it isn't as buggy. but it does need bug fixing.
