I have an early 709 and had a LOT of issues early on with FTE's, and not the stove pipe variety. The nasty kind where the extractor seems to miss the casing entirely. Around 600-800 round it really started to smooth out. I tried LOTS of different ammo and agree that it should 124 gr and 147 gr much better.
