As mentioned you can do it from both sides so 8 planks per window which offers longest protection. However be aware that having more than 3 planks on each side means you can't look out the window anymore. Also it can be benefitial to alternate between outside and inside barricading. Pretty common sense kinda thing. If you find an axe you can chop down trees to make logs. If you have a saw you can make logs into planks. If you find [any weapon] you can chop down trees to make logs, just takes longer, same for doors.
